"40 degrees is really high! It's even so high for adults. I hope he will recover soon but it's important that you are beside him when he started to feel better, it's the moment of bonding for a little child."
This is a part of an email I received from Kazu in February 2008. I had sent him a note saying I couldn't go to class because my son was sick. His reply was so kind and thoughtful, much like he was himself. What a privilege to have known someone like him.
I was a student in Kazu's class in the Spring of 2008. He is truly one of the best teachers and the nicest person I have ever met. What I learned with Kazu will stay with me forever, and for that I am forever grateful.
The first day of the class I took with Kazu, he spent some time on telling us about himself. We got a great insight in who he was, as a person and an artist. What a privilege it was to hear him speak about his career and show us his work in person. How he discovered art and decided to become an artist. How he worked with his ideas, research, process and showing us the result, a masterpiece after masterpiece.
He also talked a lot about the Beatles, and you could tell they were a big part of him. So, every time I hear "Here Comes the Sun" with the Beatles, it reminds me of Kazu (and boy, does the text feel appropriate to someone living in Iceland where the Winter lasts up to 8 months)!
So when I thought of a piece to do for Kazu's tribute, this felt like the right piece to do. As I am sure the sun shines wherever Kazu is and the songs of the Beatles play joyfully around him.
Thank you for everything Kazu, I will always remember you,
love,
Linda
