My dedication to Kazu is inspired by my favorite artwork of his entitled, The Relic. I feel so saddened by the loss yet so honored to have had the opportunity to study under such a master. His incredible work will inspire many artists to come and it truly speaks for it's self, yet the man behind it had not a shred of arrogance. He was humble and kind and saw the unique artist in all of us. I wish I could thank him for all he taught me and I credit him for my adopted love of texture and using unique materials.
I took Kazu's course durning my last year at the Academy and I wish I could have studied with him earlier. He was one of the only instructors I had that went above and beyond teaching proper technique and traditional skills. He taught me to believe in myself and that we all had our own unique voice. He never encouraged us to paint just as he did, he simply shared things he'd learned along his journey that would help us find our own way. Something he told me once, "Don't worry so much about getting it "right." You have so many wonderful ideas inside you, and that is a skill that can not be taught. The technique will come in time."
Those words have stuck with me and I will always strive to learn, improve my craft and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
Thank you Kazu.
