I was sharing with a student of my own about Kazu recently, we were talking about art that had influenced them and inspired them. In particular, we were talking about the Return of the Jedi poster, how ubiquitous something like that had become in culture, and how many images we simply take for granted as simply being "there". The influence and platform that an illustrator has to the world is astounding, and yet often taken for granted, I think.
And yet, to realize that I knew this man, was friends with, had learned from, and owe so much to Kazu, it brings that influence and reach so much more into clarity. His work and legacy is elevated past images and narratives that I simply appreciate, to something that feels so much more alive, still feels like I'm having a conversation with him on a Friday morning before class.
I can't think of someone I've ever met that was more talented, yet humble, more full of passion for his work, yet so devoted to the growing of his students. I owe so much to Kazu, in my painting skills, in my desire to teach, and my ability to tell stories. It still doesn't seem real to me that he's gone, and a part of my mind still seems to try to convince me that it was someone else who'd passed.
Kazu, may you live forever through us, and I hope that the stories and art we bring to the world will be as genuine as what you taught us. May we honor you with the journeys of our own lives, not taking the world around us for granted but seeing the great beauty and adventure within it. Thank you for sharing your life with us, your passion, your strength, your creativity, you stories, and your dreams.
